If we were not so single-minded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a huge silence
might interrupt this sadness
of never understanding ourselves
and of threatening ourselves with death.

from Keeping Still, Pablo Neruda

Subject:NYC next week
Time:07:22 pm
I'm making a very brief trip to NYC next week before classes start again. Yay! Don't know what I'll be up to, but I better soak it in fast, since i only have a few days. I may spend the whole time holed up in various people's homes, or i may spend the whole time passed out in a gutter in bushwick. hard to say.

sloppyd, gypsyecks, you guys going to the Met on wednesday?

I got an email a few weeks ago from some writer at Curve Magazine doing a piece about "Lesbian Owned Businesses". Lord knows how she got my info. But I got the email late one night when I came home drunk and I was all "whee!!! answer emails!!". I seriously don't even remember what the hell I wrote. Forgot about it. Until I got an email yesterday asking for a high-res photo of me in my "design studio" to go with the article.

ha ha! I don't know what issue it's gonna be in, but. There it is. I should ask them if they've ever considered an original comic strip...

omg. so much school work to do. i have 3 day weekends, so right now i can actually check my email and do my laundry and stuff, but during the week, it's enough of a break to pee and sleep 5 hours a night. those fuckers weren't kidding when they said that the students in the sequential art dept work really, really hard.

i like it, though. I can tell i'm learning a ton, and i don't hate the stuff i'm drawing. don't love it, either, though. but it's just homework, it's fine.

gotta get back to drawing.

p.s. my right arm really hurts. I hope this isn't going to be an ongoing thing. maybe i need to think about that break schedule a little more seriously.

san francisco was fun, had good times with some old friends and ate a lot of burritos and baked goods. You know part of what's so amazing about a real mission burrito is the perfect balance of moisture. Never dry. Never drippy. Mmmm. My last act before heading to the airport was to buy all the mexican wedding cookies that tartine would give me. I considered taking them to class with me, until i decided that i'd rather eat them all myself.

I'm really sleep deprived and PMSy right now, so i'm 0
..................kind of annoyed at how insane my cats are being. I did leave them with a cat sitter for five days, but this is ridiculous. Ivan is sitting on my hand while i type, and making pathetic little noises every few seconds. Oliver is a few inches away, just staring me down. This has been going on for hours. . Oh, now ivan's in front of the monitor, so forgive any typos. I know i should think it's cute, but i have hours of schoolwork to do tonight, and they need to fucking step off.

also i'm feeling kinda unsure about school right now. maybe just part of my bad mood. but... i don't know. i guess i knew i wasn't going to fit in from the beginning.

I'm watching the director's commentary for Pan's Labyrinth which is pretty interesting, mostly about color choices, financing problems, the usual. Then all of a sudden, there's a scene with some horse riding in it, and Guillermo del Toro goes on a crazy rant. He says "Before I shot this scene, I never liked horses. Now I hate them. They are nasty creatures. Evil. And cows! I hate cows. They are completely perverted."

had my first day of classes today, and despite so much anticipation, I wasn't prepared. how was I supposed to know syllabi were online? Well now I know. I have some shopping to do tomorrow am. art supplies!

today i had storyboarding with a very sweet man who likes to talk alot, but doesn't seem that great at getting his point across. I'm excited about storyboarding, though, based mostly on the ability to draw really fast and loosely from you imagination. Fun. I'm working on a character for that class who's a cross between my high school calculus teacher, a distant family member, and the fat guy on "the office". The other students are all infants. I think i'm the only MFA student in any of my classes. Most of them can't draw very well, and some of them have annoying undergrad attitudes, like being in school is some kind of imposition on their fabulous drug orgy schedule. But i talked to this one boy-child who seemed cool. He described the other professor I'm going to have as "nasty", which was high praise, i think. Kids these days.

tomorrow i have back-to-back 6 hours with the "nasty" guy. These two classes are supposedly really hard - perspective, anatomy, techincal layout, i don't know shit about that stuff. the syllabus is pretty intimidating. the other students are all boys. we shall see.

I'm trying to get some web work done right now, but i'm all caffeinated and excited to the bursting point, and I can't concentrate!

Lyndsey's going to be in CA for work pretty soon. I was complaining that she was going to be away for a month, and that I'm already super-bored in savannah (with school not started yet), etc. So she's helping me pay for a ticket to meet her in San Francisco for pride weekend! Trying to round up some friends out there to stay with for a night at a time... eat some damn burritos, see some naked dykes on the march... I can't wait.

So I was sitting here working, and Lyndsey was across the room at her computer. She kept asking me all the random questions about SF geography, and then weird things like "Do you still have any proof of california residency?". I asked her what she was scheming, and she said "nothing", which means, "keep asking me and I'll tell you, even though I want it to be a secret, in theory." But I let it go for a while. Then she asked me if the Haight was a cool neighborhood. I said "for what purpose?" She said "oh, you know. For us. to hang out in." I knew she was planning something for our trip, wasn't exactly sure what... until Lyndsey, my beautiful girlfriend and the worst secret-keeper in the world, starts absentmindedly singing "welcome to the hotel california!... what a nice surprise..."

also

the other night, I was in a convenience store and there was a small, older lady with big glasses hanging around the bullet-proof-glassed in counter. She seemed very unsure and expectant, so when I got in line, I asked her if she was waiting for the cashier. She said no, and then showed me a photograph of a tree. She said "Look at this. See how it looks like a person?" It did kinda. She went on "See, here's one arm, here's the other, there are the legs, and the head would be right back there." I said wow, and asked where the tree was. She said in her hometown in Alabama. Then someone got in line behind me, and she left me to go show the new people the same photograph, and said exactly the same things to them. She didn't answer when I said 'bye to her.

Also. Just read "The Road". Holy shit. read it if you like Cormac McCarthy at all. Or if you don't know him. So so good.

Oliver is so depressed and bitchy, i thought he was dying. turns out he just has NPD. (Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The name says it all.)

We took him to the vet, and the lady was really nice, talked to us for a while, gave oliver lots of love. At one point she was turning him around to stick a thermometer in his asshole, and she said to him, "okay, Oliver, turn around to face mommy and daddy."

I let out one little laughule. Did she think I was a guy the whole time we were talking? Or did she just sense that I'm the daddy?
